The Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike shall see an increase in charges for the end-user intending to watch IPL matches at their nearest stadium. From September 22, 2025, the increase changes the ticket GST rate from 28% to 40%. The Gomantak declaration elevates IPL into the highest tax slab along with luxury items and sin products like casinos and tobacco.
Hence, there shall be an increase in ticket prices. For instance, a seat booked at Rs 1,000 will be put for sale at Rs 1,400. Earlier, it was on sale for Rs 1,280. Tickets costing Rs 500 would rise to Rs 700 from Rs 640, and a ticket of Rs 2,000 will be Rs 2,800, instead of Rs 2,560. This price hike would be a hindrance everywhere for the fans and place an additional burden on them to experience the live ambiance of IPL.
Impact on IPL Fans

The GST increase will surely affect IPL fans, who will now have to pay more to watch their teams. Combined with the extra charges imposed by stadiums and online booking fees, the tax increase will render attending IPL matches a costly affair. This move may deter several fans from attending matches in person, affecting stadium attendance and revenue.
The government’s decision to treat IPL tickets as luxury items has raised few eyebrows. With the government aiming to regulate non-essential luxury spending by placing the IPL in a similar tax class with casinos and luxury goods, there could be adverse effects like reduced ticket sales, thereby affecting the IPL’s popularity.
On the flip side, international cricket matches could get cheap to attend with the lowered GST rate of 18% on tickets priced above Rs 500. This would promote attendance at international matches and would make the events less exclusive for the fans.
Additionally, due to the new GST rates on all IPL tickets and related facilities alike, will in turn be passed down as a big hike in ticket prices for a fan in the stadium. The fan must factor in the increased tax rate and perhaps additional quantum of charges while deciding to attend an IPL match.
