India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has clarified the controversy surrounding the team selection for the Asia Cup 2025 opener against the UAE. Questions were raised when left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was not included in the playing XI, sparking debates over possible bias. Kotak firmly denied such claims, stressing that there is “no agenda” behind any selection.
He explained that the final XI is always chosen after discussions with the head coach and captain, and the only guiding principle is what benefits the team most in that particular match. According to him, while leaving out deserving players is never easy, decisions are taken with a clear and transparent process.
No Room for Bias or Personal Preference
Kotak highlighted that it is natural for fans and experts to have strong opinions, especially when popular names are left out. However, he emphasized that the team management does not operate on personal preferences or favouritism. “There is no liking or disliking in team selection,” he pointed out.
For players, missing out can be disappointing, but Kotak reassured that every cricketer is valued, and choices are made keeping balance, match conditions, and strategy in mind. The coach reiterated that every member of the squad is part of the long-term plan, even if not all of them find a place in every match.
Samson’s Batting Role Clarified
The batting coach also responded to queries regarding Sanju Samson’s position in the batting order. Samson, who has primarily played in the top order throughout his career, was asked to bat in the middle order during the Asia Cup opener. Kotak explained that while Samson might not have extensive experience at No. 5 or 6, he possesses the skills to adapt and perform wherever the team requires him.
The decision was tactical, aimed at strengthening the middle order for specific match situations. Kotak praised Samson’s versatility and readiness to contribute, underlining that adaptability is crucial in modern cricket.
Kotak’s statements aimed to ease speculation and reassure both fans and players. By emphasizing the absence of hidden agendas and highlighting the team-first approach, he reinforced the management’s commitment to fairness. The message was clear: every decision, whether about bowling combinations or batting slots, is driven by strategy and the pursuit of team success in the Asia Cup 2025 and beyond.
