The International Cricket Council (ICC) has immediately suspended USA Cricket’s membership, citing “repeated and ongoing breaches” of its obligations as a member. The decision, made during the ICC Board meeting, follows a year-long review and consultations with stakeholders.

Key reasons for the suspension include USA Cricket’s inability to establish a functional governance structure, lack of progress toward recognition as a National Governing Body by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and repeated actions that harmed the sport’s reputation.

Despite the suspension, USA’s national teams will still be eligible to participate in ICC events, including preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. To maintain continuity, the ICC and its appointed officials will temporarily oversee USA Cricket’s national teams, focusing on high-performance programs and player development.

An ICC-backed Normalisation Committee will outline the necessary reforms for USA Cricket to regain its membership. This will cover governance, operational, and structural improvements, with the committee also responsible for overseeing and supporting the transition process.

“The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game,” the ICC said, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding players and growing the sport in the US.

National Teams Remain Eligible To Compete

Despite USA Cricket’s suspension, the country’s national teams will continue competing in ICC events, including preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with ICC-appointed officials temporarily overseeing management and high-performance programs.

The ICC-backed Normalisation Committee will outline the governance, operational, and structural reforms needed to lift the suspension, while monitoring progress and supporting development. The ICC emphasized its commitment to protecting players and ensuring the long-term growth of cricket in the United States.

USA Cricket was placed “on notice” in 2024 and warned again in 2025 for failing to meet membership criteria and risking cricket’s Olympic ambitions. After missing commitments made to the ICC Board in July, the council described the suspension as an “unfortunate but necessary” step to safeguard the sport’s long-term interests.
