Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has sustained an unusual injury just before the team’s first T20I against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. During a net session, Maxwell fractured his forearm after being hit on the bowling hand by a straight drive from teammate Mitchell Owen, ruling him out of the three-match T20I series.
The 36-year-old, expected to play a pivotal role in Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, is also likely to miss the forthcoming five-match series against India. This eight-match block against New Zealand and India was considered crucial for Australia’s World Cup preparations, but a spate of injuries has disrupted those plans.
The incident occurred while Glenn Maxwell was bowling in practice ahead of Wednesday’s opening T20I. Unable to evade Owen’s shot, he suffered the fracture and has been sent home for treatment, with a specialist consultation scheduled in the coming days.
Josh Philippe has been named as Glenn Maxwell’s replacement for the three-match series against New Zealand. A consistent run-scorer in Australia’s Big Bash League, Philippe is anticipated to strengthen the batting line-up and also serve as a backup wicketkeeper to Alex Carey.
Injury Concerns Hit Australia Ahead Of T20 World Cup
The 2021 T20 World Cup champions had hoped for a strong buildup ahead of the 2026 tournament. Following their ODI World Cup victory over favourites India in 2023, Australia had reason to be confident about their prospects. However, a spate of injuries has disrupted their plans, leaving the team in a challenging position just four months before the event.
Key players Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis are unavailable for the series. Additionally, captain Mitchell Marsh, one of the world’s leading all-rounders, is unlikely to bowl, further limiting Australia’s resources.
Australia squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Matt Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
