How Has Shubman Gill Done As A List A Captain?

BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, has handed over the reins of ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill ahead of India’s three-match series against Australia. However, it is worth examining Gill’s record as a captain in List A cricket, as he has yet to lead India in ODIs.

The 25-year-old has captained India 11 times across Tests and T20Is, losing three of those matches. While the Punjab-born batter boasts a List A batting average of 53.04 across 110 games, he has only captained six times, achieving a win-loss record of 5:1. This makes leading the side in Australia a significant challenge for the youngster.

Shubman Gill succeeds Rohit Sharma, who has an impressive ODI captaincy record, winning 42 out of 56 matches. Rohit, who guided India to the 2023 50-over World Cup final and Champions Trophy triumph this year, will continue contributing as a batter. The upcoming series will also mark the first competitive outing for Rohit and Virat Kohli since IPL 2025.

Shubman Gill Has Featured In Just One ODI In Australia So Far

The talented right-handed batter has appeared in just one ODI in Australia since making his 50-over debut in 2019. That lone match came in 2020 at Canberra’s Manuka Oval, where he scored a promising 33 off 39 balls, including three fours and a six. India clinched a thrilling 13-run victory, avoiding a series whitewash.

India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia kicks off on October 19 at Perth’s Optus Stadium, with the remaining two matches scheduled in Adelaide and Sydney on October 23 and 25, respectively. The T20I series will start on October 29 in Canberra.

The visitors have been in good form, having recently won the Asia Cup 2025. However, they have not played any ODIs since their Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in March.
