Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has candidly spoken about the darker side of being a professional cricketer — the relentless online trolling that often follows a single bad performance. Despite being one of India’s key pacers in recent years, Siraj has faced a barrage of insults from some sections of fans whenever he struggles on the field.
Reflecting on this fickle nature of public opinion, he said, “When I perform well, they call me world-class. But if I fail, they say, ‘jaao auto chalao’.” The phrase, which translates to “go drive an auto rickshaw,” is particularly hurtful for Siraj as it directly targets his humble background — his late father worked as an auto driver in Hyderabad.
This insensitive remark, he explained, is one of many cruel jabs he encounters online, showcasing how quickly fans’ admiration can turn into mockery.
Rising Above Negativity
Siraj admitted that such messages initially bothered him, especially given the sacrifices his family made to support his cricketing dreams. However, over time, he has developed a thicker skin and learned not to let the negativity dictate his mental space. “I don’t care about outsiders’ opinions. What matters are my family’s and teammates’ words,” he emphasized.
The pacer believes that people often forget the hard work and struggles behind an athlete’s success, choosing instead to judge them based on one performance. He added that while social media gives fans a platform to voice their opinions, it also creates a toxic environment that can affect players’ mental health if they are not mentally prepared to handle it.
Focus on Growth and Positivity
Rather than responding to the criticism, Siraj channels his energy into improving his game and staying focused on his responsibilities to the team. He accepts that scrutiny is part of a cricketer’s life, especially in a country as passionate about the sport as India. Yet, he hopes that supporters will show more empathy and patience.
Siraj’s journey — from a modest background to becoming a mainstay in India’s bowling attack — is a testament to his perseverance and mental strength. The pacer continues to draw motivation from his roots, his late father’s sacrifices, and the support of those who truly matter, ensuring that hateful comments never define his worth.
