Team India suffered a narrow two-wicket defeat against Australia in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, October 23, surrendering the three-match series with one game still to play. The Men in Blue were comprehensively outplayed—first by Australia’s disciplined bowling and later by their solid batting—as Shubman Gill continues to search for his maiden win as ODI captain.
India’s luck at the toss once again deserted them, with Mitchell Marsh opting to bowl first. The top order faltered early, collapsing to 17/2 inside the powerplay. However, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings with a vital stand before both fell in quick succession, swinging the momentum back in Australia’s favor. Useful lower-order contributions helped India set a target of 265.
The bowlers fought hard, with the pacers even pushing through cramps in the closing stages, but their efforts fell short as Australia chased down the total with more than three overs to spare. Though the visitors lost a few wickets near the end, Cooper Connolly held his nerve and guided his team home with an unbeaten half-century, sealing the series for the hosts.
Fans criticized Team India’s strategy and execution at the start of the Australian tour, raising doubts about the approach and decision-making of both the head coach and captain. Here’s how social media reacted:

If they can't defend 264 vs C side then I don't think they can win 3rd match too.
They'll give young captain excuse. But reality is this is huge loss. Casuals in India even don't know many players of Aus side. Imagine losing vs them.

I see Ind vs Aus being a rivalry only in India in ODIs
It’s Even Stevens in India with similar wins and losses— Salfee (@Salfee12) October 23, 2025

India has now reduced to a mediocre team because of pure politics.
India is heading towards a whitewash. No intent from the batsman, no fire from our bowlers..#IndVsAus— Dinesh Kumar Rajendran (@IDinezTweet) October 23, 2025

Team India Face Second Consecutive Overseas ODI Series Defeat
India have enjoyed a strong run in ODI cricket in 2025, claiming a commanding home series victory over England and following it up with the 2025 Champions Trophy title. Despite this, they have failed to win any of their last five away ODIs in bilateral series.
Their most recent overseas bilateral ODI series was in Sri Lanka, where they lost the three-match contest 0-2, with one match ending in a tie. The Men in Blue now have a chance to return to winning ways in the series decider, set to be played on Saturday, October 25, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
