The once-world-number-one T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav’s fall from the top to the bottom of the ladder has been dramatic indeed. Former India batsman Abhishek Nayar has cautioned that the captain’s lengthy batting problems will undergo heavy criticism if India does not manage to win the series against Australia. The first T20 of the five-match series started on Wednesday, October 29, 2023, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
Suryakumar Yadav’s recent form became a hot topic in the opening game, as he has not been able to score heavily since his full-time T20I captaincy. The T20 series against Australia in 2025 saw the Indian captain scoring only 72 runs in six innings, with a pathetic average of 18, although he was the one who successfully led India to the title in the UAE.
In the first match of the T20 series, Suryakumar indicated a somewhat good start, as he was about to unveil the form he had at the IPL earlier in the year. His batting difficulties have become a hot spot for criticism from the cricket pundits and the public alike.
Suryakumar Yadav has been in poor form since July 2024

Abhishek Nayar, a former Indian cricketer, has cautioned that the poor performance of Suryakumar Yadav will be under the microscope more than ever before the T20I series with Australia. Yadav has been in a slump since he was given the T20I captaincy on a permanent basis.
“This Australian tour presents an interesting scenario. While team victories often overshadow individual performances, any downturn in results will raise questions. As India’s T20I Captain and someone who’s been the number one-ranked batter in T20I cricket for a long period of time, Suryakumar’s extended run without significant scores at number three will inevitably create internal scrutiny,” said Nayar on JioStar’s ‘Game Plan’.
