Indian spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin will miss the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025/26 season following a knee surgery, the Sydney Thunder confirmed on Tuesday. The announcement ended weeks of anticipation surrounding what would have been Ashwin’s maiden appearance in the Australian T20 league and a historic moment as the first Indian men’s cricketer to feature in the BBL. The 38-year-old veteran was expected to bring his wealth of international experience to Sydney Thunder’s campaign, but his recovery timeline has made participation this season impossible.
Sydney Thunder Confirm Ashwin’s Unavailability And Express Support
Sydney Thunder released an official statement confirming that Ashwin’s knee surgery has ruled him out of the entire BBL 15 season. Despite the setback, the franchise stated that they remain in close contact with the off-spinner and are exploring a “revised schedule of activity” based on his recovery progress. General Manager Trent Copeland expressed his disappointment at the news, highlighting the enthusiasm and professionalism Ashwin displayed from their first conversation.
“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury, which has ruled him out of BBL|15. From the moment we first spoke with Ash, his commitment was clear. We hope to welcome him into our dugout later in the season and build a long-term relationship,” Copeland said. The team also reassured supporters that, even without Ashwin, their squad has the strength and depth to challenge for the championship.
Ashwin Shares His Disappointment But Stays Positive About Recovery
In his response to the announcement, Ravichandran Ashwin admitted he was deeply disappointed about missing the opportunity to play in the Big Bash but emphasised that his focus now is on rehabilitation. “I am gutted to miss BBL|15. My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I am grateful to the Thunder family and fans for the warmth they have already shown me. If rehab and travel plans allow, I would love to be around the group later in the season and meet the fans,” Ashwin said.
His absence is seen as a setback to Sydney Thunder’s marketing and promotional activities, which had been built around his high-profile signing. Nevertheless, both Ashwin and the franchise are keen on maintaining their association beyond this season, signalling that the partnership may extend into future editions of the league. Sydney Thunder are set to begin their BBL 15 journey against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 16, followed by their much-anticipated Sydney Smash clash against the Sydney Sixers at Engie Stadium on December 20.
