Playing All Formats Is a Luxury”: Kuldeep Yadav Sets His Eyes on Test Dominance

Kuldeep Yadav, India’s left-arm wrist-spinner, emphasises that being selected across the full spectrum of formats—Tests, One-Day Internationals, and T20s—is a privilege, not a given. He reflects on how playing in all formats for India is “a luxury.” He accepts that while every player would want to be involved in all formats, making the Test side holds a special place: “Obviously, you want to play in all formats, but if you get a chance to play Test cricket, you enjoy it.”

This perspective highlights both gratitude and realism: he recognises the honour of representing India in every format, but also understands that the opportunities—especially in Test cricket—must be earned and maintained amid intense competition.

Focus on Test Cricket and the Road Ahead

Kuldeep is clear about his intentions and priorities for the coming years. He notes that although players may savour being part of all formats, Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge and enjoyment: “Everyone loves Test cricket. It’s a format that everyone enjoys, but it’s also very challenging.” He then identifies the next four to five years as critical for his Test-career growth and adds: “The next 4-5 years are very important for me in Test cricket, so I will focus on maintaining my fitness and keep performing like this.”

In essence, he’s committing to the long-haul of first-class cricket, implying that longevity, fitness and consistent performances will be his path to staying relevant in the longest form. This shows his maturity in understanding that raw talent alone isn’t enough; sustaining a Test career requires physical preparation, mental resilience and continuous performance.

Role Clarity and Mindset

Kuldeep further remarks that having a clear role in the team, backed by the confidence of the management, allows him to adopt an attacking and purposeful mindset every time he steps onto the field. He credits that clarity and support for his ongoing relevance.

By embracing an attacking mindset, he is signalling that he doesn’t want to merely be part of the playing XI—he wants to contribute decisively. Given the stiff competition in Indian cricket, especially for spin bowlers, this mindset becomes a differentiator. Essentially, Kuldeep is saying: I understand where I fit, I know what is required of me, and I want to deliver with intent and purpose.
