Mitchell Starc delivered a standout performance with the ball on Day 1 of the opening Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Friday, November 21. The left-arm quick claimed his 17th career five-wicket haul, finishing with impressive figures of 7/58. His brilliant spell enabled Australia to bowl England out for just 172 in their first innings.

Starc set the tone early, removing openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett before securing the key wicket of Joe Root. The veteran pacer maintained his dominance in the second session, dismissing captain Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, and later cleaning up the tail. In doing so, he also surpassed the 100-wicket mark in Ashes Tests.

Fans on X praised the 35-year-old for his outstanding display.

Key players like Joe Root and Ben Stokes couldn’t make an impact, as Mitchell Starc kept striking at consistent intervals in England’s first innings and maintained relentless pressure throughout. Root was dismissed for a duck after seven balls, while Stokes fell cheaply for a single-digit score, continuing his rough patch.

In contrast, Harry Brook stood out with a fluent 52 off 61 deliveries, hitting one six and five fours to steady the innings. Ollie Pope added a valuable 46 off 58, and Jamie Smith contributed a quick 33 off 22. Ben Duckett (21) was the only other batter to cross double figures during England’s disappointing outing.

Besides Starc, debutant Brendan Doggett picked up two wickets for Australia, while Cameron Green claimed one important breakthrough. In reply, England made an early impact as Jofra Archer trapped debutant Jake Weatherald lbw for a duck. At the time of writing, Australia were 0/1 after 3.3 overs, with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease trying to rebuild steadily.
