Vikas Kohli’s Cryptic Post Sparks Debate Over India’s Test Strategy
Team India

Virat Kohli’s elder brother, Vikas Kohli, has sparked discussion on social media after posting a subtle but sharp remark aimed at India’s current cricket management. His comment came at a time when the Indian team is struggling in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. India, already trailing in the series after a 30-run defeat in the first Test, were reduced to 27-2 while chasing a massive target of 549, leaving them with a near-impossible task of scoring 522 more runs to level the series.

Against this backdrop, Vikas shared a pointed message on Threads, questioning the direction the team has taken under the present leadership. Although he did not directly name head coach Gautam Gambhir, the remark appeared to be directed at the current management’s decisions and alterations to India’s established Test match framework.

His statement, “There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions…. Now we are playing to save the match….even in India.. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessarily, which were not broken….,” echoed concerns felt by a section of fans who believe India’s prior winning formula has been unnecessarily disrupted.

Concerns Over India’s Declining Test Form

The present team management structure features head coach Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav. Under this regime, India’s Test performance has steadily deteriorated. The team has endured more losses than wins, marking an unusual shift for a side once dominant in the longest format.

Particularly troubling has been the form of India’s top order, which has averaged below 30 during this period. The team has also consistently failed to breach the 300-run mark across innings, a stark departure from the stability and scoring strength previously provided. This downward trend has overlapped with the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two pillars of India’s batting for more than a decade.

Series Setbacks Highlight Larger Issues

India’s slump has been visible in recent major series. The team faced a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand, a rare occurrence considering India’s long-standing dominance on home soil. This was followed by a 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a series that also saw India miss out on a spot in the World Test Championship final.

In the ongoing series against South Africa, India again finds itself struggling, having lost the opening Test and now edging toward another home series clean sweep. Vikas Kohli’s remark reflects growing scrutiny over the direction and decisions of the current leadership as India searches for stability in its Test cricket identity.
