Team India opener Rohit Sharma impressed the audience by hitting consecutive sixes off South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen during the opening ODI in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. South Africa had earlier won the toss and opted to bowl first. India had an early setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed by left-arm pacer Nandre Burger in the fourth over.
However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stabilized the innings and ensured a strong start for the hosts despite the early wicket. In the 15th over, Sharma shifted momentum decisively by attacking Subrayen. The over began with the off-spinner delivering a tossed-up ball outside the off stump.
The experienced batter struck the first delivery powerfully over the mid-wicket boundary with a commanding slog sweep. Subrayen stuck to his approach and bowled another flighted delivery, but Sharma repeated the shot and once again cleared the mid-wicket fence for a second consecutive six. It is notable that with his second six, Rohit Sharma equaled the record for the most sixes in ODI cricket, previously held by former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi. Afridi had hit 351 sixes in 369 innings, while Sharma reached the same milestone in just 269 innings.
Sharma went on to surpass Afridi later in the match, claiming the world record with a magnificent six off Marco Jansen in the 20th over.
Rohit–Kohli Stand Strengthens India’s Grip
South Africa made a strong start with the ball by removing Yashasvi Jaiswal early. However, senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli brought stability to India’s innings with an important partnership. At the time of reporting, the duo had added 128* runs from 101 deliveries for the second wicket.
India were 153/1 after 20 overs, with Kohli batting on 65 off 57 balls and Sharma on 56 off 47. This also marked the pair’s second century stand in ODI cricket. Their previous hundred-run partnership came in India’s nine-wicket win over Australia in Sydney last month, where they put on an unbeaten 168 from 170 balls.
