Virat Kohli, fresh off a Player-of-the-Series performance against South Africa, opened up about a remarkable personal resurgence. He acknowledged that his recent performances felt like a throwback to his dominant years before the pandemic. Kohli admitted, “I don’t think I have played at this level for a good 2-3 years now.” His fluent batting and renewed mindset have been evident throughout the ODI series.
The Indian batting superstar delivered consistently across the three matches, amassing 302 runs at a stunning average of 151.00 and a strike rate exceeding 117. He smashed two centuries — a composed 135 in Ranchi and a blistering 102 in Raipur — along with a quickfire unbeaten 65 in the decider. Kohli described the Ranchi knock as the turning point that “opened him up” and helped him feel liberated at the crease again.
Mental Peace Driving Confidence
Reflecting on his comeback, Kohli emphasised that feeling mentally free has made all the difference. “The most satisfying thing for me is how I’m feeling about my game. I feel really free in my mind,” he said, explaining that long careers often force players into phases of doubt. For veteran batters, every ball carries the threat of a single mistake ending the innings — a challenge that can trigger self-questioning.
He reflected philosophically on sport, noting how it tests personal resolve and mental strength. “That’s the beauty of sport… you have to keep overcoming the fear every ball,” Kohli explained, saying he values that he is still contributing meaningfully to India’s success. The pressure, he believes, ultimately shapes temperament and also helps one grow as a person beyond the field.
Rediscovering His Power Game
Kohli also spoke about unlocking new gears in his batting — including big hitting. He noted that when he plays with freedom, clearing the ropes comes naturally. “When I play freely, I know I can hit sixes. There are always levels you can unlock,” he said, suggesting that his game still has unexplored dimensions.
He expressed gratitude for the response from fans and the confidence the series gave him. Having not played competitive cricket since the series in Australia, Kohli cherished how naturally he found rhythm again. Ranchi, in particular, he described as “very special,” marking the beginning of a phase where his old fire appears fully rekindled.
