India head coach Gautam Gambhir strongly criticized Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal after he publicly pushed for separate coaches for India’s Test and white-ball teams. Gambhir, without directly naming him, condemned the interference during his interaction with the media after India’s ODI series win in Visakhapatnam. He made it clear that people not directly involved with national team decisions should refrain from influencing them.
Gambhir expressed frustration about excessive commentary following India’s Test defeat in Guwahati against South Africa. He insisted that many remarks were irrelevant to the sport and crossed professional boundaries. “God knows what all things were said (when we lost the Test series to South Africa and half of them were not even related to cricket,” he said, asking critics to remain within reasonable limits.
“Stay in Your Domain,” Says Gambhir
Gambhir’s strongest reaction was directed toward the suggestion floated by the IPL team owner — believed to be Parth Jindal — advocating for split coaching in the national setup. He firmly opposed this idea and warned against IPL franchise owners attempting to influence Indian cricket’s structural decisions. “Ek IPL ke owner ne bhi likkha split coaching ke bare mein. Hum kisi ke domain mein nahi jate, so it’s important that people stay in their domain,” Gambhir stated, calling the proposal “surprising and unwarranted.”
The former India opener emphasized that coaching the national side involves far more complexities than IPL cricket, and such responsibilities should not be dictated by franchise voices. He advised that the execution of long-term cricketing plans for India must remain in the hands of professionals directly accountable for the national team.
Context Ignored After India’s Setbacks
Gambhir also argued that critics overlooked crucial factors during India’s defeat in the two-and-a-half-day Kolkata Test at Eden Gardens. Despite focus on the pitch conditions — where India were bowled out cheaply chasing a modest target — he pointed out that captain Shubman Gill was unavailable due to a sudden neck injury and did not bat in either innings.
He reminded everyone that India is undergoing a transitional phase and missing a captain who is also the side’s best red-ball batter naturally makes success tougher. Ignoring this context while calling for structural changes, he said, reflects “a misunderstanding of cricketing realities by people outside their domain.”
Gambhir’s sharp remarks reinforced his belief that the national team’s evolution must be guided by those who fully understand its internal demands — not by external stakeholders seeking influence.
