The upcoming IPL 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi will bring about significant changes in the representation of the Punjab Kings. Shreyas Iyer, the bearer of the captaincy, will take an enlarged role and head the team’s auction event with his personal presence. The team has changed its perspective on player acquisition this season significantly with a new approach.
The appointment of Iyer as the chief of the delegation is a sign of the franchise’s belief in his leadership skills not only on but also off the field. The captain’s job will be to make decisions that matter concerning the selection of players and their positions in the team for the next season.
One of the most important things that is going to happen is that the head coach, Ricky Ponting, will not be present in the auction delegation. Iyer will, in a way, take over the role of Ponting, sharing the burden of additional responsibilities with his captaincy duties. This change shows the franchise’s maturing and changing ways of handling auctions.
Ricky Ponting misses out due to Ashes commentary commitments:

The Punjab Kings have furnished their delegation details to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on time before the closure of the IPL 2026 auction on December 10. What Cricbuzz got through reports is that the captain Shreyas Iyer will be the one taking the franchise’s representation in Abu Dhabi and the team of eight members will be allowed inside the auction hall while six others will be positioned outside. This delegation composition is indicative of the team’s strategic approach to player acquisition for the coming season.
Ricky Ponting, the head coach, is not part of the auction delegation because he has already taken up commentary for the Seven Network during the 2025-26 Ashes series. The third Test match will start on December 17, just one day after the auction on December 16, so Ponting’s scheduling constraints do not allow him to be there. The timing conflict has led the franchise to find a different way for the coaching of the representation.
Daniel Vettori will replace the coach travelling to Abu Dhabi for the auction. The former New Zealand cricketer received approval from the Australian cricket board to leave the ongoing Ashes Test series for the moment. Vettori’s presence means that there will be a coaching perspective during the player acquisition process forthe Punjab Kings, especially when it is just a matter of experienced coaching.
