India’s rising young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi delivered a breathtaking performance by hammering 171 in the opening match of the U19 Asia Cup against the UAE at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai on December 12. The 14-year-old left-handed batter showcased remarkable confidence and power as he reached his century in only 56 balls, giving India a dominant start after the UAE opted to bowl first.
He began steadily but switched to aggressive play soon after, getting off the mark with a boundary on his sixth delivery. Vaibhav brought up his half-century in just 30 balls and continued to attack the bowlers relentlessly. A dropped chance at long-off when he was on 85 allowed him to extend his innings, and he soon completed his second Youth ODI ton of the year. His innings featured clean hitting, fearless strokes, and complete command over the UAE bowlers.
Why The Landmark Innings Will Not Enter Official Records
Despite the magnitude of his knock, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s 171 will not be recognized as an official Youth ODI record. Matches between India U19 and UAE U19 do not carry Youth ODI (YODI) status. According to ICC regulations, outside of the U19 Cricket World Cup, only fixtures played between two Test-playing nations qualify for official YODI recognition.
This means India’s upcoming clash against Pakistan U19 will be counted as an official YODI, while contests against teams like Malaysia U19 will not. During his innings, Vaibhav struck nine boundaries and an astonishing 14 sixes, maintaining complete control throughout. For a while, he appeared poised to become the first Indian to score a double century in Youth ODIs, even if unofficial. However, his innings ended when he attempted a scoop shot off Uddish Suri and was dismissed for 171 off 95 balls at a blazing strike rate of 180.

A Remarkable Year For A Rising Star
Vaibhav’s brilliant knock adds to what has already been a memorable year for him. Recently, he smashed an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls for Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Maharashtra, marking his maiden T20 century. Earlier, he excelled in the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, amassing 239 runs, including a lightning-fast 32-ball hundred against the UAE.
His impressive outings in youth tournaments in England and Australia further strengthened his reputation. Vaibhav gained nationwide attention after being bought for Rs 1.1 crore as a 13-year-old in the IPL 2025 auction. He quickly justified the hype by smashing the second-fastest century in IPL history during his debut season, becoming the youngest player to score an IPL hundred.
