In the second Test of the 2003–04 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Adelaide Oval, Australia posted an imposing total of 556 runs in their first innings, powered largely by Ricky Ponting’s 242. In reply, India lost early wickets and found themselves in dire straits at 85/4, with key batters back in the pavilion and the Australian attack dominating the contest.
The situation mirrored moments of past struggle against Australia, and the Indian dressing room faced the prospect of a massive deficit. At this point, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman walked out to bat, tasked with rebuilding the innings under immense pressure and daylight fading on India’s hopes.
The Epic 303-Run Rescue Act
Once together, Dravid and Laxman displayed incredible resolve and complementary batting styles. Beginning cautiously to steady the innings, they gradually shifted gears, punishing loose deliveries while keeping a watchful eye on the quality Australian bowlers. What followed was a monumental partnership of 303 runs for the fifth wicket, a stand that not only revived India’s innings but also silenced the home crowd’s momentum.
Laxman played with flair and intuition, scoring 148 runs, while Dravid anchored the effort with a monumental 233, absorbing pressure and rotating the strike with precision. Their effort reduced Australia’s first-innings advantage to a mere 33 runs when India finally closed at 523 all out.
Bowling Brilliance and a Thrilling Chase
India’s resurgence did not stop at batting. In Australia’s second innings, Ajit Agarkar ran through the hosts’ batting line-up, claiming 6 for 41 to dismiss them cheaply for 196 and hand India a target of 230 to win. Despite early setbacks in the chase, India’s batters showed grit, with contributions across the order.
Once again, Dravid guided the team from the middle, remaining unbeaten on 72 as India reached the target with four wickets in hand, sealing a memorable Test victory on foreign soil.
This win was particularly significant, marking one of India’s rare Test triumphs in Australia and showcasing the mental toughness and skill of a team that had been on the back foot early on. Dravid’s all-around performance earned him the Player of the Match award, and his innings later contributed heavily to him being named Player of the Series.
