BCCI Breaks Silence on Refund Demands After Fog Washes Out 4th India vs SA T20I

The fourth T20I between India and South Africa at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow was abandoned without a single delivery being bowled due to excessive fog and poor visibility, triggering disappointment among fans who had filled the stands.

The unexpected washout quickly led to questions around ticket refunds, with many spectators taking to social media to demand clarity from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The situation became more prominent as the match was officially called off well before play could begin, leaving fans frustrated after spending money on tickets, travel, and accommodation.

“Competent Authority” Responsible for Refunds

Breaking its silence on the matter, the BCCI clarified that the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) is the body responsible for handling refunds. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the state association is the “competent authority” when it comes to ticket sales and reimbursement procedures. He explained that while the BCCI governs the sport nationally and allocates hosting rights, ticketing operations and refunds fall under the jurisdiction of the host association.

According to existing BCCI guidelines, if a match is abandoned without any play, spectators are eligible for a refund, though service or convenience charges may be deducted depending on the ticketing platform’s terms and conditions.

Renewed Debate Over Winter Scheduling

The abandoned match has once again sparked debate over the timing and location of international fixtures in northern India during winter months. Fog and air quality issues have frequently disrupted matches in recent years, raising concerns over player safety, broadcast challenges, and fan experience. Critics have questioned whether venues prone to extreme weather conditions should host high-profile international games during this period.

While no official changes have been announced, the incident has intensified discussions about scheduling reforms to avoid similar disruptions in the future. For now, fans are awaiting clear communication from UPCA regarding refund timelines, while the BCCI has reiterated that it will continue to support state associations in ensuring that established policies are followed fairly.
