Jemimah Rodrigues Ready For Bigger Leadership Role As DC Captain Earns Global Backing

The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League is set to begin on January 9, with Mumbai Indians facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening match. As excitement builds, several teams have gone through important changes before the new season. One of the most talked-about developments has come from Delhi Capitals, who have made a bold leadership move after falling short in three consecutive finals since the league began.

Ahead of WPL 2026, the Capitals decided to hand over the captaincy to Jemimah Rodrigues. She replaces former skipper Meg Lanning, who moved to UP Warriorz during the auction. This decision marks a significant moment for both the franchise and Rodrigues, as it will be the first time she leads a team at this level.

Jemimah Rodrigues Takes Charge Of A Star-Studded Squad

Rodrigues steps into the role with the responsibility of guiding a side packed with experience and international quality. Players such as Marizanne Kapp and Laura Wolvaardt form the backbone of the squad, offering balance and leadership support. While the challenge is big, the Capitals management has shown faith in Rodrigues’ ability to unite the team and take them one step further after years of near misses.

The decision reflects Delhi’s intent to build a long-term leadership core, focusing on players who understand the team culture and the demands of the league. With the WPL growing stronger each year, the Capitals are hoping this fresh approach will finally help them lift the trophy.

Kapp Backs Jemimah As A Future India Captain

Speaking about the leadership change, Marizanne Kapp shared strong words of support for Rodrigues. In an interview, the South African all-rounder made it clear that she believes Jemimah has the qualities needed to lead at the highest level.

“I actually said a couple of years ago that Jemimah should be India’s next captain. She’s always been a leader. Her personality, the way she brings people together, the caring factor, all matter. Even experienced captains face challenges. Jemimah has a lot of senior players around her, and I think she’ll take this opportunity with both hands.”

Kapp’s statement has added weight to the belief that Rodrigues could be a long-term leadership option for India, potentially succeeding current captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the future.

WPL’s Role In Player Development And Growth

Kapp also spoke about how the Women’s Premier League has contributed to her own growth as a cricketer. Having been part of Delhi Capitals since the inaugural season in 2023, she highlighted the impact of playing in competitive franchise leagues.

“On a personal level, my game would never have grown the way it has if it wasn’t for these leagues,” she said. “Even when you look at the youngsters coming through now, a lot of that is thanks to leagues like the WPL.”

As Kapp prepares to represent Delhi Capitals for a fourth consecutive season, her experience and backing of Rodrigues could prove crucial. With strong leadership, growing confidence, and lessons learned from past finals, Delhi Capitals enter WPL 2026 with renewed hope and ambition.
