“Your Job Is To Score Runs”- Joe Root Defends Jamie Smith After Harsh Criticism

Joe Root stood firmly by teammate Jamie Smith after the young batter faced heavy criticism for his dismissal in the first innings of the final Sydney Test. Smith once again showed promise before throwing his wicket away, missing out on a half-century by just four runs. His attempt to attack a short delivery resulted in a catch at deep cover, handing a wicket to part-time bowler Marnus Labuschagne.

While commentators labelled the shot as “brainless,” Root explained that the intent was clear, as England were trying to squeeze extra runs before the second new ball was taken. According to Root, the plan was never reckless hitting, but calculated aggression to push the game forward during a crucial phase.

“Your Job Is To Score Runs, Not To Survive”

Root elaborated on the team’s approach and made it clear that there was thought behind Jamie Smith’s innings. “It was completely different that second new ball, and it was almost maximising that 10-over period ahead of facing that new ball. You eke out an extra 20 runs that could be the difference later on down the line. So there was a method behind what we were trying to do. You are never playing to get out. As a batter, your job is not to survive; it is to score runs. You cannot win games just by surviving.”

Joe Root also stressed the importance of balance, saying players must learn from mistakes without being overly harsh or overly forgiving on themselves. He expressed confidence that Smith, considering what he has already achieved, will find the right mindset going forward in the series.

Brook’s Confidence Boost And Match Situation

Root also spoke positively about vice-captain Harry Brook, who narrowly missed a maiden Ashes century in Australia. “Brooky played exceptionally well, and it was a vital partnership for us to play in that manner,” Root said, adding that the knock could be crucial in the context of the match. Brook has been one of England’s brighter performers in the series, sitting among the top run-scorers.

England resumed day two at 211/3 and eventually posted a competitive 384, built around Root’s superb 160 and solid support from Smith and Will Jacks. For Australia, Michael Neser led the bowling effort, while the hosts replied with a steady start, led by Travis Head’s fluent unbeaten knock. The contest remains finely poised as both sides look to gain the upper hand in the deciding Test of the Ashes.
