Australia’s aggressive left-hander Travis Head once again flirted with a double century before falling short, continuing a frustrating yet productive pattern in the ongoing Ashes. On Day 3 of the fifth Test at Sydney, Head was dismissed for a commanding 163, marking the second occasion in the series where he failed to convert a big start into a double hundred.
Earlier, he had been dismissed on 170 during the Adelaide Test, underlining how close he has repeatedly come to reaching the milestone.
Despite missing out on a landmark score, Head’s innings was vital in putting Australia firmly in control. His fluent strokeplay dismantled the England bowling attack and ensured that the hosts built a strong platform in the first innings, frustrating the opposition for long periods.
“Pretty Stat”: Head’s Honest and Humorous Take**
After the innings, Head was informed of an unusual statistic — that he has now been dismissed seven times between scores of 150 and 175. The batter responded with characteristic candour and humour, calling it a “pretty s**t stat”. However, he was quick to add perspective, saying he would “much rather get 160–170 than 0–10”, making it clear that the runs still mattered more than personal milestones.
Head admitted that he may have had a couple of missed opportunities to push on further during the series but stressed that he was not dwelling on them. Instead, he chose to focus on the enjoyment of batting and contributing when the team needed him, suggesting that individual landmarks were secondary to the broader goal.
Australia Take Control as Smith Anchors the Innings
Head’s contribution, combined with a composed and authoritative innings from Steve Smith, helped Australia seize control of the Test match. By stumps, the hosts had secured a 134-run first-innings lead over England, putting significant pressure on the visitors.
Smith’s calm presence complemented Head’s attacking intent, allowing Australia to dictate terms and build a commanding advantage. While the elusive double century continues to evade Head, his consistent big scores have been instrumental throughout the series, reinforcing his value as one of Australia’s most impactful middle-order batters.
