Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a hefty sum of Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL auction, saw his contract being abruptly terminated following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The decision came as a major surprise, especially since the left-arm seamer had no disciplinary or performance-related issues connected to the league. The sudden development triggered strong reactions in Bangladesh cricket circles, with questions being raised about the reasons behind such a move and its wider implications for foreign players participating in the tournament.
Teammate Tanzim Sakib Voices Concerns Over Politics in Cricket
Mustafizur’s national teammate Tanzim Sakib openly expressed his unease over the situation, hinting that factors beyond cricket might have played a role. Speaking to the Daily Star, Sakib said it was unclear why Mustafizur was removed from the IPL setup and suggested that there could be political reasons behind the decision. At the same time, he stressed that cricket should remain separate from politics.
Sakib explained that players generally focus only on the sporting aspect and submit their names for leagues like the IPL with the simple aim of playing at the highest level. He also added that such incidents might make Bangladeshi players more cautious in the future, with consultations involving agents and officials likely before deciding to register for the league again.
No Financial Compensation Likely For Mustafizur
Another significant aspect of the issue revolves around compensation. Despite being released through no fault of his own, Mustafizur is unlikely to receive any financial payout from KKR. According to sources familiar with IPL regulations, player salaries are usually insured, but these clauses mainly apply in cases of injury sustained after joining the team camp or during the tournament.
In such situations, insurance can cover up to 50 percent of the payment, while centrally contracted Indian players are generally compensated directly by the BCCI. However, Mustafizur’s case does not fall under these standard conditions, as his release was neither injury-related nor linked to on-field participation. As a result, KKR are not contractually obligated to pay him any amount.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has reacted strongly, reportedly demanding that Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. The episode has added a new layer of tension to cricketing relations, raising broader questions about player security, governance, and the intersection of sport and external influences.
