Shaheen Afridi’s Sportsmanship Remark Triggers Fresh Asia Cup Debate

The controversy surrounding the Asia Cup 2025 final continues to spark debate months after the tournament ended. Although India defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side never lifted the trophy. The moment turned awkward when Indian players declined to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who is the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Asian Cricket Council.

As a result, Naqvi walked away with the trophy himself. The final had already been clouded by tension, as Indian players had earlier refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts. This stance came in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, which deeply influenced India’s approach during the event.

Shaheen Afridi’s Comment Sparks Backlash

The episode returned to the spotlight after former Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi made a strong statement while addressing the media. Speaking about the Asia Cup controversy, Afridi said, “People across the border violated sportsmanship. Our job is to play cricket, and that remains our focus. We will try to respond on the field.”

His remarks did not sit well with many fans, especially on social media. Several users criticised the pacer sharply, with one commenting, “Empty vessels make the most noise.” Another questioned his standing by writing, “Are you even fit for a reply,” while some mocked the confidence behind the statement. Others challenged him directly, saying, “Let’s see on the field.” The reaction showed how sensitive and divided opinions remain when cricket and geopolitics intersect, particularly in high-profile India–Pakistan encounters.

Injury Worries Ahead Of T20 World Cup

Away from the controversy, Shaheen Afridi is currently focused on recovery. The left-arm pacer is nursing a knee injury and is under the supervision of the Pakistan Cricket Board medical team at the High Performance Centre in Lahore. While the PCB released footage of Afridi undergoing rehabilitation, no clear timeline has been shared regarding his return to full fitness.

Afridi sustained the injury while fielding during a Big Bash League match in Australia, after which he was released by Brisbane Heat and called back by the PCB. This is not the first time knee trouble has sidelined him, as a similar injury during a Test match in Galle in 2021 kept him out for several months. With the T20 World Cup set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Afridi’s fitness is crucial for Pakistan’s pace attack. Pakistan’s T20 captain Salman Ali Agha expressed optimism, stating, “We are hopeful he will be fit for the World Cup, but the final decision will come from the (Pakistan Cricket) Board on advice from the medical panel.”
