Tilak Varma Shatters Records With Explosive Performance In SMAT

Team India batter Tilak Varma shared a light-hearted comment about batting after Ishan Kishan during the T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa. The Men in Blue registered a comfortable 30-run victory on Wednesday, February 4.

Tilak came in at number three after India won the toss and opted to bat first. Impressed by the explosive start provided by Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, he said their approach gave him the confidence to back himself and play his shots freely.

“The way Ishan was batting, I have seen him, the way Abhishek was batting, I was also like Main bhi maarunga jaake (I will also go hit),” he said in a video shared by the BCCI post the game.

Backing his approach, the left-hander went on to produce a scorching innings, hammering 45 runs off just 19 deliveries. His explosive knock featured three fours and three sixes, coming at an impressive strike rate of 236.84. India eventually piled up a massive 240/6.

At the top, Ishan Kishan blazed his way to a 53 off 20 balls, while Abhishek Sharma chipped in with 24 from 18 deliveries before both openers were retired out. Suryakumar Yadav (30 off 16), Axar Patel (35* off 23), and Hardik Pandya (30 off 10) further boosted the total with rapid cameos.

Tilak Varma Reflects On His Return And T20 World Cup 2026 Hopes

Tilak Varma was sidelined from the home T20I series against New Zealand after picking up an abdominal injury and subsequently underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. The talented batter made a successful recovery and marked his return in India’s first warm-up match against the USA, scoring 38 off 24 balls.

Speaking about his comeback, Tilak expressed his gratitude to the CoE and the BCCI for their support. He also shared his thoughts on featuring in the T20 World Cup 2026 and reflected on his experience from the warm-up fixture.

“To be honest, I did not expect this early that I will be back on the field. Really thankful for CoE and BCCI. I always say that World Cup is my biggest dream to play. The way I entered the rope, everyone was shouting Tilak Tilak, I did not expect that. I really felt nice and it boost me when I was going in,” he said.
