Out-of-favor Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has shared his account of the dramatic final moments of the T20 World Cup 2024. The 35-year-old revealed that Mohammed Siraj broke down in tearswhen South Africa was just 30 runs away from victory with 30 balls remaining.
Chasing a target of 177, the Proteas initially lost two early wickets but then steadied their innings, putting themselves in a strong position. However, a dramatic collapse unfolded after Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 52, was dismissed. South Africa eventually fell short by seven runs, handing India their second T20 World Cup title.
Speaking to Sports Tak, Yuzvendra Chahal said he felt a surge of hope after Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasenand added that the entire nation must have shared in the emotional celebration following India’s triumph.
“We felt that Heinrich Klaasen would finish the match in 12 balls in T20 World Cup 2024 final. When Hardik dismissed him, we knew we have a chance. Winning that World Cup is the best feeling of my life.”
“The entire nation must’ve cried after that win. Siraj had already started crying when South Africa required 30 runs off 30 balls. I told him match is not over yet. Players cried even during 2019 World Cup semi-final,” Chahal said.

With several members from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad featuring in the upcoming edition, Chahal feels the team is well-prepared to handle pressure and deliver once more. The 35-year-old further added in the same discussion:
“Pressure is definitely there during World Cups because it comes every two or four years. You prepare for that. This team already has players that have won the World Cup and tasted that success. If this team loses, they’ll lose by themselves. There is no other team that can defeat India right now in T20Is. I’m confident 200 per cent.”
