Crishan Kalugamage has scripted a remarkable journey that blends migration, hard work and sporting ambition. Born in Sri Lanka, he grew up in a cricket-loving environment in the coastal region of Negombo, where the game is woven into everyday life.
As a youngster, he admired some of the finest cricketers from his homeland and dreamt of achieving something meaningful in the sport. However, life took him on a different path when he moved to Italy with his family during his teenage years.
Adjusting to a new culture and language was not easy, but Kalugamage gradually built a life for himself. He became fluent in Italian and integrated smoothly into the local community. While cricket opportunities in Italy were limited compared to Sri Lanka, his passion for the sport never faded. Instead, he worked tirelessly to keep his dream alive, balancing responsibilities while sharpening his leg-spin bowling skills.
The Pizza Chef Who Delivered on the Big Stage
Away from the cricket field, Kalugamage works full-time as a pizzaiolo in Lucca, Tuscany. The demanding routine of a pizza chef often left him with little free time, yet he remained committed to training and representing his adopted nation. Managing long hours in the kitchen alongside competitive cricket required sacrifice and discipline, but he embraced the challenge with determination.
His perseverance paid off in historic fashion at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In a landmark match against Nepal, Kalugamage delivered a match-winning performance with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets for just 18 runs. His spell dismantled the opposition’s batting order and paved the way for Italy’s dominant 10-wicket triumph. It was not just a personal milestone but a defining moment in Italian cricket history.
A Historic Win and a Proud Moment
Italy’s victory marked their first-ever win at the T20 World Cup, making the achievement even more special. For Kalugamage, the triumph symbolized years of persistence, resilience and belief. After the match, he expressed immense gratitude towards his family and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey. He described the achievement as a “massive” moment, acknowledging the sacrifices made along the way.
The story of Kalugamage is more than just a sporting headline; it is a testament to how passion can overcome circumstance. From the cricket grounds of Sri Lanka to the kitchens of Tuscany and finally to the global stage, he has proven that dreams can thrive even in unlikely settings.
