Former South Africa and Mumbai Indians (MI) player Shaun Pollock dismissed the fact that Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer could have retired out in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). On a placid Mullanpur track, Iyer was seen struggling for timing throughout his innings, as he managed 30 from 27 deliveries.
As a result, PBKS posted 222/4 in their 20 overs despite playing well after the start in the powerplay. However, PBKS eventually lost the match in the final over as well.
Talking about this, Pollock said on Cricbuzz: “It depends on who you have coming in next. If Stoinis had already played two knocks like he did in this game, and he was still to come, you could consider it. But there was no one else down the order that was in better form. It would have been a brave call.”
However, Shaun Pollock also believes Shreyas Iyer’s intent was good, but his usual timing was not good during his 27-ball stay, and that didn’t help the team either in the RR clash. Yet, the veteran urged him to ensure he doesn’t fall into a similar trap in the future as well.
“His intent was there, and he was swinging at times. But he just couldn’t get anywhere near the connection he wanted. You have one of these days where you try as hard as you can, but the timing is not on. I wouldn’t read too much into it, but it’ll be something where he’ll look at himself. No one will bring it to his attention, but he’ll be conscious of it to ensure he doesn’t fall into that trap again,” Shaun Pollock concluded.
