Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has resigned as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League. On Friday, May 29, the Lucknow-based franchise announced the development through a statement on X, revealing that the 28-year-old had asked to be relieved of his captaincy responsibilities following the team’s disappointing last-place finish in IPL 2026.
Pant, who was acquired by LSG for Rs 27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, saw his request accepted by the franchise with immediate effect.
“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect,” LSG said in a statement.

“Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody said.
Rishabh Pant’s Captaincy Record In IPL
Rishabh Pant was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for a record-breaking ₹27 crore on the opening day of the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah. Soon after, he was named captain of the franchise for the 2025 season. However, LSG struggled under his leadership, securing only six wins from 14 league-stage matches.
The wicketkeeper-batter also had a modest season with the bat, managing 269 runs in 13 innings. Despite the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs, the franchise continued to back him as captain for IPL 2026. The following season brought little improvement, as Pant faced another underwhelming campaign.
He scored 312 runs across 13 innings at a strike rate of 138.05, while LSG won just four of their 14 league matches, eventually finishing at the bottom of the table under his captaincy.
