Sunil Narine’s brilliance, along with the Bay Area’s strong winds, ended Steve Smith’s attempt to lead his American team to a second Major League Cricket title on Sunday. The Australian-heavy Washington side, coached by Ricky Ponting, struggled against Narine’s crafty spin in the final at the iconic former baseball venue.
Smith and Ponting, who led the franchise to the 2024 title, were left disappointed after falling short in a thrilling contest that went down to the final ball. Washington’s decision to leave out Glenn Maxwellalso came under the spotlight.
Although Maxwell had endured a difficult tournament with the bat, the Freedom could have used his experience during a tense chase. Instead, veteran Obus Pienaar produced his maiden T20 half-century to keep their hopes alive and take the match into the final over.
WHAT. A. FINISH.

USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk successfully defended 14 runs by dismissing Pienaar after being hit for a first-ball six. He then kept his composure on the final delivery, with Washington’s tailenders managing only one run when they needed three to win.
Earlier, Player of the Tournament Sunil Narine, one of four West Indies players in the Dwayne Bravo-coached LA side, removed Mitch Owen, Rachin Ravindra and Steve Smith for single-digit scores during the Powerplay.

“We thought it was gettable,” sometime New York resident Smith said of the 164 made by LA after he inserted them at the toss. “I thought our guys pulled it back really well.
“But three wickets in the Powerplay always hurts. ‘Sunny’ (Narine) is obviously a world-class bowler and he was hard to get away.”
“I’m proud of the way the boys fought. To get as close as we did hurts probably even more. But the guys showed great character and fight to get to where we got to.”
MLC 2026 Final Draws Record Crowd As Bay Area Stadium Faces Uncertain Future
On the eve of the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, the USA league’s title clash drew its biggest-ever crowd of 10,200 at the renovated stadium. The venue, however, faces an uncertain future as it is reportedly set to be sold to a local sports and entertainment group for A$179 million (USD $125 million).
According to the San Francisco Herald, the Bay Area stadium has struggled with issues such as sewage leaks, feral cats and possums. Its unusual boundary dimensions also made it the highest-scoring venue in T20 history before the final among grounds that have hosted at least 10 matches, according to CricViz.

Steve Smith’s dropped catch, caused by the Bay Area’s swirling winds, proved costly as LA raced to 54 in the Powerplay on a slowing pitch that was hosting its fourth match in four days.

Despite Nikhil Chaudhary’s two wickets in three balls and Ben Dwarshuis’ stunning catch helping Washington restrict LA to the lowest playoff total, Sunil Narine’s early strikes, including Steve Smith’s wicket for 8, left the Freedom with too much to do.
A 65-run stand between Andries Gous and Chaudhary revived the chase, while Obus Pienaar’s late assault threatened to turn the game before Shadley van Schalkwyk held his nerve in the final over.
