There was not great news for Afghainstan wicket-keeper Afsar Zazai and West Indies off spinner Ashley Nurse as both of them were involved in a fight during the first One day International at ST Lucia on 9th June. Zazai was fined 15% of his match fees while Nurse was criticized of his behaviour by the ICC.
The incident took place during the 29th over of Afghanistan innings as Zazai was not happy with the decision of LBW and showed review signal. In the West Indies innings, Ashley Nurse responds the umpire’s decision in a poor manner as he was dismissed by Rashid Khan in the 29th over.
Afghanistan showed great composure during the first match against West Indies by winning it by 63 runs. It was another upset in ODI cricket after Pakistan defeated South Africa, Sri Lanka stunned India and Bangladesh defeated Bangladesh in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2017.
The associate nation scored 212 for 6 in their 50 overs with contributions from Ahmedi who scored 81. Rashid Khan was at his best during the first ODI match picking 7/18 and registering the fourth best figures in ODI cricket bowling West Indies for just 149. This helped Afghanistan to trash West Indies by 63 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Both the players did violate the Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players in which the players are fined for showing unhappiness with an umpire decision during an international match. Ashley Nurse and Zazai have been penalized with one demerit points each on behavioural grounds.
In the second ODI match against West Indies on 11th June, West Indies defeated the associate nation by 4 wickets to level the series at 1-1. Afghanistan was bowled out 135 in 37.3 overs. Rashid Khan again showed his class with 3 wickets in 10 overs as West Indies won the match by 4 wickets.
Shamshuddin, Joel Wilson, Lesile Reifer and fourth umpire Nigel Diguid charged both players with this offence. Both players accepted their mistakes as match referee Jeff Crowe gave penalty. There was no need of formal hearings required for the incident that took place during the first ODI Match.
