Virat Kohli was expected to receive backlash after India convincingly lost the ODI series against Australia. Ashish Nehra has now tagged Kohli as an impulsive captain who is making too many changes quite frequently. In yesterday’s ODI, Kohli made a lot of bowling changes in trying to desperately pick up wickets. No bowler was given a spell of more than two overs after which nobody settled into a rhythm.

As a result, Australia was ruthless and smashed the Indian bowlers for fun. For the second game in a row, the hosts set India a target of beyond 350 which was always going to be an impossible target to chase down. Virat Kohli did contribute with the bat but his decision making in the first half was immensely scrutinised by several experts.

Now, Ashish Nehra declared that captain Kohli is being hasty with his decisions. The former India cricketer was also surprised to see India’s strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah just bowl two overs with the new ball. He added that too many bowling changes just made things complicated for everyone which Kohli needs to improve going ahead as captain.

Ashish Nehra also made an interesting point with regards to Kohli’s batting in a run chase. He talked about the first ODI and stated that Kohli wasn’t himself in the chase as he looked in a hurry to chase down the target.

“In today’s game, Virat Kohli gave two overs to Mohammed Shami and then brought Navdeep Saini. He wanted Shami to bowl from the other end, that I understand, but then, why would he use Jasprit Bumrah for only two overs with the new ball?

I agree Virat Kohli is making frequent changes in bowling. He only had five bowling options. India used Mayank Agarwal and Hardik Pandya – it was a decision made on the ground. If things were going in India’s way, you would not have seen these two getting an over,” Ashish Nehra told Cricbuzz.

Virat Kohli is being hasty in his decisions. In the previous game (first ODI) as well, after Kohli was dropped, it seemed like he is in a hurry. Kohli has chased 350 several times in his career, it is not a big deal for him. But it seemed like he was chasing 475, not 375. I believe, Kohli is an impulsive captain. He is making too many changes in his bowling. And this is an area that he needs to take care of,” the former cricketer added.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli will have a point to prove when he leads India in the final ODI and the 3 matches T20I series. Under Kohli’s captaincy, India has lost 5 consecutive ODI matches which is a worrisome stat. It will be interesting to see how Kohli responds on the field when he leads India in the final ODI at Canberra on Wednesday.
