It is that time of the year in Australia and the Big Bash fever is ON. The women’s Big Bash league is underway, and the ladies are all set to entertain the fans for the next seven weeks. Eight teams in total representing major cities in Australia play a total of 59 T20’s.
Top players from various countries are spread across the teams and the league culminates with the semi-finals and finals on February 1,2 and 3-venues for which would be decided at a later stage. After a successful Ashes campaign, the Aussie women now make the transition to cricket’s slam-bang version. Sydney Sixers are the defending champions having won against Perth Scorchers in 2016-17 and had earlier squared up against the Melbourne stars for their first match of season 3.
The Sixers outfit wrapped up the proceedings with a thumping 86 run win at North Sydney Oval, Sydney.
But the match halted momentarily in the last over of the Sixer’s innings when skipper Ellyse Perry’s six-hit a spectator in the long-on region. The incident happened when she was batting on 78 and struck a clean blow off a leg spinning delivery from Beams over the fence. She was initially delighted but had a concerned look on her face as soon as she noticed the spectator troubled by the blow.
She rushed to the boundary halting the proceedings for few minutes and resumed after ensuring that the situation was under control. Her knock of 91 off 49 including 9 fours and 4 maximums helped her team post a total of 4/242. Earlier in the innings, 20-year old Ashleigh Gardner smashed the fastest century in WBBL history that included a 150-run partnership with Perry.
Sixers face the Sydney Thunder next at the same venue and crowd would be turning up in huge numbers to witness the derby clash.
