The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), confirmed that the fifth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) will be held in the months of July and August. The dates are yet to be finalized.
Due to the COVID-19 situation last year, the TNPL, like many other state leagues also got canceled. This year though, the tournament is back, but without the crowd. With the increasing COVID cases in the state and the predictions of a third wave, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has decided to host the tournament behind closed doors.
The tournament, comprising of 32 matches will be majorly held in Chennai, with TNCA also looking at Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli, and Dindigul as the other venues.
“We are planning three phases for the league. We intend to start the league in Chennai because the Covid cases are down in the city. Basing on the government’s approval, the matches will be held in two other venues and we will come back to Chennai for the final,” the TNPL official told Cricbuzz.
The decision regarding the dates and venues for the tournament will be taken soon, in consideration with the COVID-19 situation prevalent in the state.
Over the years, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) has gained popularity in the local and domestic cricket circuit in India. It was first started in 2016 by the TNCA with the idea to allow the local players in the state a platform to showcase their talent playing alongside the giants of Tamil Nadu cricket such as the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Stars like T Natarajan, Varun Chakravarthy, and Washington Sundar, who are representing the nation at the highest level are products of this Tamil Nadu Premier League. Chepauk Super Giles were crowned as the winners in the last edition.
