The Australian captain returned to Sydney airport today after 1-year ban from Cricket Australia regarding ball tampering scandal during the 3rd day of a 3rd test match against Cape Town on Saturday.
Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner got 1 years banned, while Cameron Bancroft got 9 months ban. Smith felt very sorry for the incident that took place in Cape Town. I failed to act as a leader and take the charge for what happened. Steve Smith also expressed his disappointment and looked devastated regarding the incident.
He broke multiple times during the press conference that took place in Sydney. Cricket is the biggest game in the world and the way we reacted in the Cape Town test was wrong. He also said that Smith does not blame anyone for the incident. The 28-year-old captain will not feature in Australian colors for 12 months.
Steve Smith was given 1 match ban by ICC and also 100% match fees. The Australian government decided to interfere and gave harsh punishments to Smith, Bancroft and David Warner.
Smith said if any good can come out of this and if others can learn lessons out of this incident then I can hope that I can be forced to change, also said that he will regret for rest of my life. I hope in time I can earn back the respect and also forgiveness.
It will be a big blow for the Australian cricket team as they will be without their top two players in next 12 months which means Smith and Warner would miss the series against India at home this year.
