The inaugural edition of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) has already grabbed all the limelight for all the negative reasons. The T20 competition, sanctioned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will run from August 6 and will take place in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Initially, the tournament was scheduled to take place in May but it was pushed to August. The league would primarily feature Pakistani cricketers as well as some former international cricketers.
Meanwhile, the tournament has already garnered some controversy with PCB and former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs alleging that BCCI is threatening overseas cricketers, who are participating in the competition. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, has maintained that it won’t let any player part of the KPL take part in any cricketing activity in India.
Amid this controversy, former England spinner Monty Panesar has already pulled out of the tournament. He took to Twitter to reveal the news. The former cricketer wrote:
“I have decided not to participate in the KPL because of the political tensions between India and Pakistan over kashmir issues. I don’t want to be in the middle of this , it would make me feel uncomfortable.”
