Meanwhile, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan opined that Jasprit Bumrah should have been the Man of the Match in the first Test. Notably, Joe Root was awarded man of the match for his sensational performance with the bat. Root scored an amazing half-century in the first innings, meanwhile, in the second innings, he did an even great job by scoring a marvelous ton.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Zaheer Khan labeled Bumrah as the standout winner. Also, he talked about how Bumrah picked a wicket in the very first over and then demolished England’s batting tail.
“I would pick Bumrah as the man of the match because from the very first over itself, he set the tone of the Test match. And although Joe Root batted well in the second innings and brought his team in a position where they could be in the game, the bowlers still had to do the job of picking wickets. So Bumrah is a standout winner. England’s lower-order couldn’t contribute much because of Bumrah’s yorkers.”
“Joe Root is the glue that has held this order together” – Zaheer Khan
England’s batting unit has faced a lot of criticism lately for their poor run. However, in all the matches, England’s batting failed to contribute there was one consistent performer, the skipper Joe Root. Root has performed sensationally for England in 2021, he has already crossed the 1000 Test run mark in the year. Also, he recently became the highest run-getter for England in international cricket.
Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan lavished praise on Joe Root and said his form will be critical for team England and Root needs to perform consistently well. Zaheer Khan stated:
“When you look at England’s batting order, you look at the chinks in the armor and when these chinks look to perform better, they need an anchor. Joe Root is the glue that has held this order together. His being in form are good signs for the England team and he will need to continue if England are to do well against this Indian bowling line-up.”
