he England openers Cook and Jennings got the team off to a steady start adding 28 runs for the first wicket. Mohammed Shami took the wicket Jennings for 11 runs. 4 runs later, Ishant Sharma dismissed Cook for 21 to leave England at 32 for 2. The debutant Pope and captain Joe Root added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Hardik Pandya dismissed Pope for 28. Before the lunch break, Mohammed Shami dismissed captain Joe Root to leave England at 89 for 4 at lunch.
After the lunch break, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow played attacking strokes adding 42 runs for the 5th wicket. Mohammed Shami dismissed Jos Buttler for quick fire 24 off 22 balls. Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes attacked the Indian bowlers with some attacking stroke play. Bairstow reached his half-century off 76 balls while Chris Woakes also reached his 50 off 71 balls. At tea, England ended on 230 for 5.
After the tea break, Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes continued their aggressive intent punishing the Indian bowling. Chris Woakes reached his maiden century off 129 balls. Hardik Pandya dismissed Jonny Bairstow for 93 runs. Both Woakes and Bairstow added 189 runs for the 6th wicket. Sam Curran and Chris Woakes added 37 unbeaten runs for the 7th wicket before bad light stopped play.
Bairstow came to the crease in a tough situation and was troubled by the Indian bowlers at the start. After settling in, Bairstow looked confident making the batting look easy.
