India ended the first day of a 3rd test match in a decent position at Trent Bridge, Nottingham just finished a few moments ago. A brilliant 159 runs between Rahane and Kohli helped India to leave them at 307 for 6.
England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bowl first. There was a change in the opening pair again as Shikhar Dhawan came to replace Murali Vijay. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul played Stuart Broad and James Anderson well. In the first hour, both openers scored 43 runs and continued to play with positive intent.
It was the first time that Indian openers survived outside Asia since 2014. Chris Woakes dismissed Dhawan for 35. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul added 60 runs for the opening wicket. Soon after, Woakes got the wicket of KL Rahul for 23. Cheteshwar Pujara was looking good before trying to hit a hook shot and was dismissed before lunch. At lunch, India were 82 for 3.
After the lunch break, the Indian Virat Kohli and Rahane struggled for some time before putting pressure on England bowlers. Both players looked confident in their defence and made the batting look easy. The Indian captain Virat Kohli reached his 18th half-century off 74 balls. Apart from Kohli, Rahane became the first Indian batsmen to score the half-century in this series so far. He reached his half-century off 76. India went into the tea break with the score at 189 for 3.
The third session began off well for Kohli and Rahane playing with positive intent. It was a great batting display by the experienced pair. Stuart Broad dismissed Rahane for 81 with a brilliant catch by Cook at slips. Both Rahane and Kohli added 159 runs for the 4th wicket. Hardik Pandya came to the crease and played with some positive strokes. The Indian captain Kohli missed a well deserved century scoring 97 runs getting out off Adil Rashid bowling. Risbabh Pant came to the crease and smashed his 2nd ball in test cricket for 6.
Before the close of play, James Anderson got the big wicket of Hardik Pandya for 18. India ended the first day on 307 for 6 with Pant not out on 22. For England, Chris Woakes was the pick of bowlers with 3 wickets while Broad, Anderson and Adil Rashid picked 1 wicket each.
