Mukesh’s first two games in IPL 2022 were forgettable. He picked 1 wicket and conceded runs at 11+ economy. Discussions with MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad, helped Mukesh bounce back. In Match 33 of IPL 2022, against Mumbai Indians, Mukesh registered figures of 19/3 and grabbed ‘Man of the Match’ award. His confidence increased after this performance.
Mukesh added: “In my first two matches, I couldn’t perform to my potential. So, I used to talk to him (Dhoni) every day and also in between matches. Dhoni told me to believe in my abilities. Rutu (Ruturaj) is my friend… so he was always there with me, he supported me and gave me the confidence saying, ‘You have everything, you just have to believe in yourself because for every player it happens, where they go through this phase.’ After the Mumbai (Indians) game, I gained confidence and continued to bowl with that confidence.”
In the absence of Deepak Chahar, Mukesh took charge of powerplay bowling for CSK. The pacer played 13 matches, picked 16 wickets in his debut season. Along with DJ Bravo, Mukesh was CSK’s leading wicket-taker in IPL 2022.
