Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir said that Sri Lanka can pose a threat to India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The Lankans will have to play the Qualifiers to reach the Super 12 stage of the showpiece event.
Gambhir said that Sri Lanka’s recent performance in the Asia Cup 2022 in the UAE will help them and they are peaking at the right time. Incidentally, India suffered a six-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka during the Super-Four stage of the continental tournament in Dubai last month as well.
“Sri Lanka, because of the kind of success they have had at the Asia Cup. The way they are playing, the way they are probably peaking at the right time,” Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’.
“And with Chameeraand Lahiru Kumara coming in, they probably got most of their places covered. They are going to be a threat and so they are going to take a lot of confidence in the T20 World Cup,” he continued.
Sri Lanka are one of the four teams who qualified for the first round of the T20 World Cup on the back of their rankings from the last tournament. And, they would be able to qualify for the Super 12 stage if they finish in the top two of Group A as well.
“Any team can upset anyone” – Gautam Gambhir
The former India opener also added some tips for India on how to approach every opposition team at the mega event – T20 World Cup. Gautam Gambhir said no team can be taken lightly as any of them can trouble in the shortest format of the game.
“Just like any other game, just like against Pakistan, South Africa or any other game. No team can be taken lightly especially in a format like T20, because in a T20, the shorter the format, any team can upset anyone,” Gautam Gambhir concluded.
Team India will begin its campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super-12 stage of the T20 World Cup on October 23 in Melbourne as well.
