Adam Gilchrist Comments On Star Indian Batter Ahead Of ENG vs IND 1st Test 2025

Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist playfully mocked young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for his on-field exchange with veteran pacer Mitchell Starc during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The moment occurred during the second innings of the first Test in Perth, where a confident Jaiswal told Starc, “It’s coming too slow.”

Backing up his words, the left-handed batter went on to score a stunning 161 off 297 balls, helping India secure a commanding 295-run victory. However, Australia bounced back strongly, winning three of the remaining four Tests to clinch the series 3-1. Gilchrist gave a cheeky response to Jaiswal’s comment about Starc in a chat with Sports Yaari.

“I think, Jaiswal (is the next big superstar). He has shown us… he had a little period of having to learn a bit more, dig in deeper, but I sense that he handles it. It’s (Starc vs Jaiswal) just good banter. Every dog has his day, and that day was his. Well and truly.”

“He dominated us in that Test match in that second innings, and Starc brought it back a little bit later on. That’s the beauty of the game. But that was just good, honest banter.”

“Didn’t Actually Hear Him”- Mitchell Starc Downplays Jaiswal Incident

Mitchell Starc, reflecting on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s “too slow” remark after the Perth Test, said he didn’t hear it during the game. The two had fierce duels throughout the series, with Starc taking 18 wickets at an average of 28.66. Speaking to Cricket.au (via Hindustan Times), Starc addressed the incident.

“I didn’t actually hear him say I bowled too slow. I don’t say too much to people these days. I may have been back in the day, but now I just sort of get on with it. Played that flick shot and I think I bowled pretty much the same ball, and he defended it. I asked where the flick shot was, and he laughed at me. We just left it at that.”

Starc recently featured in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, where Australia suffered a five-wicket loss to South Africa. Meanwhile, Jaiswal is set to make his Test debut in England, with the series kicking off in Leeds on Friday, June 20.
