Agni Chopra, the son of renowned Indian film director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, showcased his batting prowess in his debut Ranji Trophy appearance. The 25-year-old impressed with notable innings in both matches for Mizoram.

In Mizoram’s season opener against Sikkim at GS Patel Stadium in Nadiad, Agni contributed scores of 166 and 92. Mizoram, having won the toss and chosen to field, witnessed Sikkim declare at 449/9 in their first innings, with Sumit Singh’s century being the standout performance.

Agni Chopra played exceptionally well for Mizoram, scoring 166 runs in one inning, while the rest of the team struggled and only reached a total of 214 runs. In the next inning, the 25-year-old newcomer continued his good form, adding 92 more runs to his tally.

Agni had his debut in first-class cricket with Mizoram in 2023. He played for the team in the 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Across seven T20 matches, he has scored 234 runs with an average of 33.42.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, enjoying the success of his movie 12th Fail, has an additional reason to rejoice. His son, Agni Chopra, had an impressive debut in the Ranji Trophy, scoring a total of 258 runs, making a fantastic beginning to his career in first-class cricket.

After being enforced to follow-on, Mizoram improved their batting performance, scoring 397 runs in the second innings. Alongside Agni Chopra’s 92, Mohit Jangraa achieved a century with 126 runs.

Sikkim secured a significant victory by successfully chasing the 170-run target in the final innings. Sumit Singh and Ashish Thapa contributed 76 and 60*, guiding their team to a four-wicket win. Next, Mizoram faces Nagaland at GS Patel Stadium in Nadiad, beginning on Friday, January 12. They currently hold the fourth position in the points table in the Plate Group.
