Angelo Mathews Criticizes ICC for Sri Lanka's Negligible Test Schedule Amid 2-Tier WTC Discussions

Test cricket, often hailed as the purest format of the game, has been overshadowed by the rising dominance of shorter formats and commercial pressures. Recently, Sri Lankan cricket veteran Angelo Mathews voiced his discontent over the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to allocate a meagre number of Test matches for his side in 2024.

Background of Angelo Mathews’ Concerns

Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced cricketers, expressed his frustration on social media, calling the ICC’s scheduling decisions absolutely shocking. His concern isn’t unfounded; Sri Lanka, despite showing promising performances in the Test arena, is scheduled to play only four Tests this year.

“Absolutely shocking to hear that srilanka is only playing 4 test matches this entire year including the aus tests this month @ICC,” said Mathews in a post on X.

Sri Lanka’s Test Cricket Schedule for 2024

Sri Lanka is set to play only four Test matches in 2024, two against Australia and two against Bangladesh. For a nation that was once a powerhouse in Test cricket, such a limited schedule raises valid concerns about the format’s future in the country.

In contrast, cricketing giants like Australia, India, and England have packed Test calendars. For instance, Australia recently hosted the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy, drawing record-breaking attendance and viewership figures.

Amidst the controversy, batter Kamindu Mendis brought some positive news by equalling Don Bradman’s record as the fastest batter to reach 1000 Test runs in 75 years. Such milestones highlight the potential within Sri Lankan cricket, which could be better nurtured with a more robust Test schedule.

Speculation around a Two-Tier World Test Championship (WTC)

Test cricket continues to thrive in countries like India, England, and Australia. However, in smaller cricketing nations, it struggles to compete with the commercial appeal of T20 leagues. There is growing speculation that the ICC might introduce a two-tier system for the World Test Championship. Under this system, top cricketing nations would play in Division 1, while smaller teams, including Sri Lanka, might find themselves relegated to Division 2.

This idea was first proposed in 2016 but was quickly shot down due to opposition from various cricket boards, including the BCCI. The big three cricketing nations — India, England, and Australia — dominate the Test cricket calendar, leaving smaller teams like Sri Lanka fighting for opportunities. Cricket boards in smaller nations lack the financial muscle to compete with the commercial juggernauts of India, Australia, and England, further limiting their opportunities in the Test arena.

Impact of Limited Test Matches on Sri Lankan Cricket

The upcoming two-match Test series against Australia holds significant importance. Despite being a dead rubber in terms of WTC points, it presents an opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase their skills against a top-ranked team.

Sri Lanka is set to host West Indies, India, and Pakistan in 2026. However, each series consists of only two Tests, reflecting the continued marginalization of Test cricket in smaller nations.
