Pakistan’s 22-year-old talent, Saim Ayub, has been ruled out of the remainder of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town due to an ankle injury. The incident occurred during the seventh over of the opening day when South African opener Ryan Rickelton edged a delivery past the slips.
As Aamer Jamal chased the ball to deep third man and pulled it back, Ayub, positioned as the relay fielder, lost his balance and twisted his ankle. The young cricketer immediately collapsed in pain, clutching his lower leg.
Despite the physio’s efforts, Ayub was carried off the field on a stretcher, visibly emotional. He was taken to the hospital after the injury, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed he would miss the remainder of the match.
“Saim underwent X-rays and MRI tests this afternoon. The reports have been sent to specialists in London for further advice on the treatment and time away from competitive cricket,” read the statement [via ESPN Cricinfo].
Salman Agha admitted that Ayub’s absence would be a significant setback for Pakistan in the remainder of the Cape Town Test.
“It’s a big blow, the kind of form he’s in. He would have been a great asset on this wicket. I wish him well and hopefully he’ll be better soon,” he said at the close of play on Day 1.
Ayub has been in sensational form during the South Africa tour, smashing two centuries to secure Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series win. He also played a remarkable unbeaten 98 in the second T20I, though it came in a losing effort.
South Africa take control on Day 1 of Cape Town Test following Ayub’s injury
Saim Ayub’s injury marked the beginning of a tough Day 1 for Pakistan in the second Test at Cape Town. After a narrow two-wicket loss in the opening Test at Centurion, the visitors faced further setbacks, losing the toss and being sent to bowl first.
Despite a strong start, reducing South Africa to 72/3 by the 23rd over, Pakistan lost momentum as the Proteas dominated, ending the day at 316/4 in 80 overs. Ryan Rickelton remained unbeaten on a superb 176 off 232 balls, while skipper Temba Bavuma scored a gritty 106 off 179 deliveries before falling late in the day.
