The rivalry between India and Pakistan has always been the heartbeat of international cricket, with matches often transcending the sport itself. Recently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) made a monumental decision to host all India-Pakistan matches at neutral venues until 2027. This move aims to navigate the complexities of political relations while ensuring uninterrupted action for fans.

Key Details of the ICC Decision

The ICC’s neutral venue policy will apply to several upcoming tournaments, including the Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 in India, the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028 in Pakistan, providing clarity for stakeholders and ensuring seamless tournament planning.

Political sensitivities and security concerns have made bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan nearly impossible. By opting for neutral venues, the ICC prioritizes the safety of players and fans while maintaining the sanctity of these high-stakes matches.

ICC Board said that “India and Pakistan matches hosted by either country at ICC Events during the 2024-2027 rights cycle will be played at a neutral venue.”

Neutral venues have significant implications, ensuring high viewership for broadcasters without the risk of cancellations, providing uninterrupted cricketing action for fans, and leveling the playing field for players with equal conditions for both teams.

Insights from IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal

Arun Dhumal, the IPL Chairman, expressed his support for the ICC’s decision. He highlighted that this move benefits all stakeholders, including cricket boards and broadcasters. According to him, clarity on tournament planning is crucial for the sport’s growth.

“It is good that we got some clarity on the Champions Trophy, and also the future ICC tournaments. That will be helpful for all the stakeholders, cricket boards, and the broadcasters,” IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told IANS.

India-Pakistan Matches in the Champions Trophy 2025

The much-awaited clash between arch-rivals in the Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled for February 23. Dubai and Colombo have emerged as top contenders to host this match. This encounter is expected to be a highlight of the tournament, given its historical and emotional significance.

India-Pakistan matches are among the most-watched sporting events globally. Broadcasters are anticipating record-breaking viewership, while fans remain excited about the continuity of this iconic rivalry, despite the neutral venue arrangement.

PCB and ICC Hosting Rights

The PCB has been granted hosting rights for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2028, continuing the trend of hybrid formats. This arrangement ensures Pakistan’s involvement in hosting marquee events despite the challenges of bilateral relations.

India is set to host the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 and co-host the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with Sri Lanka. These events will showcase India’s cricketing infrastructure and fan enthusiasm.

Hybrid formats, while innovative, come with logistical hurdles. For Pakistan, securing neutral venues that align with ICC standards is a challenge. Meanwhile, India must balance its commitments to hosting and participating in these tournaments. Dubai and Colombo are the preferred neutral venues due to their advanced cricketing infrastructure and accessibility for fans. These locations have successfully hosted high-profile matches in the past, making them ideal choices.
