The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise holds a distinct legacy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as one of the most successful teams, having clinched five titles. The team’s strong foundation and consistency in maintaining a core group of players have played a crucial role in its success.
Recently, Ambati Rayudu engaged in a conversation with CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, delving into the decisions behind retaining key players like MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shivam Dube. Viswanathan highlighted that the team’s success stems from its loyalty to core players. “It was very easy to decide on the retentions,” he shared, emphasizing Dhoni’s lasting impact and the strategic decision to maintain a cohesive team environment.
MS Dhoni’s Future at CSK: “The Doors Are Open”
When Rayudu asked about Dhoni’s future with CSK, Viswanathan underscored Dhoni’s immense value to the franchise and expressed hope for his continued presence. “As long as MS wants to play, the doors are open,” Viswanathan affirmed, recognizing Dhoni’s dedication to CSK and his widespread fan following.
With Dhoni’s own words about playing his final game in Chennai, Viswanathan shared the franchise’s optimism that Dhoni would stay involved with CSK for as long as possible, emphasizing the captain’s unparalleled commitment and ability to make the right decisions for himself and the team.
The Decision to Choose Dhoni in 2008
Viswanathan also reflected on the pivotal moment in 2008 when CSK selected Dhoni as their captain, despite strong contenders. He explained that CSK’s owner, Mr. N. Srinivasan, initially leaned toward Test cricket over T20 but eventually agreed to bid on a team.
At the time, most teams sought an “icon” player—Mumbai had Sachin Tendulkar, Bangalore had Rahul Dravid, and Kolkata had Sourav Ganguly. “Having seen MS earlier, we felt that he will be a better bet than any of the other players,” Viswanathan recalled, adding that the franchise realized Dhoni was the right choice shortly after bringing him on board. This decision laid the groundwork for a fruitful partnership that has since become iconic in the IPL.
