In the third Ashes Test match at Headingley, Australia’s batsman Steve Smith faced boos from the crowd after being dismissed due to a Decision Review System (DRS) review. Smith managed to score 22 runs in the first innings.
During the first day of the third Ashes Test match on July 6th, Steve Smith, the Australian batsman, was jeered by the Headingley crowd.
The former Australian captain received this negative reaction after being given out following a DRS review, as it was revealed that he had edged the ball to the wicket-keeper.
Tensions were already high after a controversial final day at Lord’s in the second Test match of the series.
The dismissal of Jonny Bairstow had triggered the crowd to boo the Australian team at Lord’s, which is not typically known for such heated behavior.
As Smith played his 100th Test match, he was subjected to boos while entering the ground on this particular day.
Despite being called to bat early due to a collapse in the top order by the Australian team, Smith couldn’t make a significant impact.
While batting at 22, he misjudged an inswinger from Stuart Broad, resulting in a faint inside edge that went straight into the hands of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.
After being given out, Smith consulted with Travis Head and decided to use the DRS system for a review.
The umpire quickly reviewed the decision, and the ultra-edge technology clearly showed a spike when the ball passed Smith’s bat.
It was at this point that the Headingley crowd turned against Smith.
Smith has a history of facing hostility from the English crowd, particularly since his return after the Sandpaper Gate incident.
He made his comeback at Edgbaston after serving his ban and, despite receiving widespread boos from the stadium, scored twin centuries, which his Australian teammates consider his greatest innings.
In the ongoing Ashes series of 2023, Smith had a decent start, including a match-winning century at Lord’s.
However, on Thursday at Headingley, he failed to rescue his team from a difficult situation, getting out after scoring only 22 runs. At the lunch break on Day 1, Australia was struggling at 91/4 in 26 overs.
Stuart Broad stood out among the bowlers, taking 2 wickets, while Mark Wood and Chris Woakes each claimed one wicket.
