Australia defeated England to take a 1-0 lead in the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston after Pat Cummins scored the winning runs in the final hour of the final day.

Australia was in ecstasy at Edgbaston after five days of top-notch Test cricket, while England was inconsolable.

Dominated the hosts in the first Test of the prestigious Ashes 2023 on Tuesday at Edgbaston.

With his match-winning knock, paceman Pat Cummins led Australia’s batting team to a thrilling victory over England by a margin of two wickets.

Australia’s historic victory at Edgbaston was sealed by Cummins. He took four wickets in the Baggy Greens’ second innings and finished unbeaten on 44.

The winning runs were scored by the star pacer for the newly crowned ICC World Test Championship (WTC) champions. They set off wild celebrations in the Australian camp.

Cummins threw off his helmet, tossed his bat, and lifted teammate Nathan Lyon after sealing the Ashes opener in Birmingham with a boundary.

To take a 1-0 lead in the bilateral Test series between the bitter rivals, Australia successfully chased down a difficult total of 281.

Usman Khawaja, the visitor’s opener, led all scorers in both innings. While Cummins served as a finisher with the bat, earning him Player of the Match honors.

In the first innings, England scored 393-8 in 78 overs, with Cummins going wicketless.

Australia under Cummins scored 386 in its first essay at Edgbaston thanks to Khawaja’s brilliant 141-ball innings.

In the second innings, pacer Cummins and bowler Lyon shared eight wickets between them to dismiss England for 273 runs in 66 point two overs.

Then, to lead the WTC winners to a storied victory, the Australian Test captain played a magnificent knock of 44*. The final hour of game day saw Cummins score the winning runs.

In a game-changing partnership for the ninth wicket at Edgbaston, the Australian captain and Lyon (16*) combined for 55 runs.

After the game, Cummins said, “One of the beauties of this series is the totally contrasting styles.”

“We both used our respective advantages. It’s hard to say which approach is superior. But it’s entertaining nonetheless,” the Australian captain continued.
