Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, acknowledges the substantial gap in strength between India and his own team, recognizing that India’s prowess poses a formidable challenge. Nevertheless, he is determined to secure victory to enhance his team’s chances of reaching the Asia Cup 2023 final.
In this critical match, India faces Sri Lanka during the Super Four stage, and the coin toss favoured India, prompting them to choose to bat first on a notably dry pitch. Anticipating a pivotal role for spinners during the latter part of the game, the conditions seem favourable for India’s strategy. A win against Sri Lanka in this encounter would significantly solidify India’s position in the Asia Cup final.
Sri Lanka remains steadfast in their lineup, opting for the same playing XI that proved effective against Bangladesh. With their eyes set on a robust start with the ball, Sri Lanka aspires to gain a momentous triumph over the formidable Indian side. Such a victory would not only boost their confidence but also serve as a turning point in their journey through the tournament.
Shanaka said “We would have batted first as well. They are pretty strong side compared to us but we have to play a good game, we will somehow try to win the game. We are going with the same team. The youngsters have become senior players. Young Wellalage is doing so well, Samarawickrama, Matheesha Pathirana. Hopefully everyone will continue their momentum today,” he further added.
“Sri Lanka find themselves in second place in the points table after their emphatic win against Bangladesh, just behind table toppers India. A win here would take them to the top of the table. The weather looks good at the moment, with no signs of rain and it is expected to arrive later in the day. It is to be noted that there is no reserve day for this match. A washout would mean both teams share a point each,” he concluded.
